Infant Care (The First Year)

What are the most important things for a teenager to know about a babyís first year? This program describes the essentials of the infantsí needs and how they can be satisfied. The kinds of subjects covered are feeding, clothing, diapering, bathing, health, love, stimulation, safety, and development stages during the first year of life. Yet, each infant is different and the parents must learn how the baby likes to have its special needs met through "feedback" from the baby. This process is explored. Special attention is given to providing emotional support to the infant. This program is designed to give the potential parent an idea of the important considerations of care. It is valuable also to your students who will be baby-sitting. Applicable to grades 7-12, boys and girls.

Pregnancy Through the First Months
       (Your First Baby)

Most teenagers will be parents.  What can they learn now that will help them then?  Part I describes key issues which can be addressed before the baby arrives: to breast or bottle feed, to use cloth or disposable diapers, where to go for inexpensive classes, and the importance of the prenatal period for the baby's health.  What the mother eats, drinks, and smokes during the first trimester, before she knows she's pregnant, affects the baby's chances of birth defects.  Part II describes some of the common problems new parents can expect during the first months after birth -- and what to do about them: normal and temporary skin blemishes, the change in the relationship between the parents, the potential for child abuse, that each baby is different, and the danger signals which mean "take the baby to the doctor, now."  Good for middle an high school, boys and girls.
